Retrofit Tesla M3 Matrix Headlights

What is matrix led?

Matrix LED is an advanced automotive lighting technology featuring individually controllable LED segments that dynamically adjust the light pattern for optimal road illumination while avoiding glare for other drivers. This system enhances safety and driving comfort by automatically adapting to traffic conditions and allowing continuous high beams without dazzling other vehicles.

Why should you retrofit

For me the old automatic high beams were the biggest downside of the model 3s built before 2021. Even compared to other older cars the system is almost unusable, because it takes the car insanely long 3 seconds to switch from low to high beams, if an oncoming car was detected. That’s why I retrofitted matrix lights on my 2020 Tesla Model 3 (SOP5).

Requirements

You will need to following parts:

  • 1x 1514952-00-D - Headlights for Tesla Model 3 / Y left (Global)
  • 1x 1514953-00-D - Headlights for Tesla Model 3 / Y right (Global)

… and tools:

The upgrade is fairly simple and can be performed in 4 hours with no prior experience. It seems like any Model 3 / Y 2019+ can be retrofitted. Tesla does not perform official retrofits.

Tesla Toolbox Tips

Tesla Toolbox V3 costs 45€ per hour.

Hourly subscriptions are only available in EU. You can rent the software here. Use the “Renew Subscription” button to find the hidden 1-hour option.

The software is web-based, no install required. If you press pay, your countdown starts. So make sure, everything is ready:

  • Read every step in the manual carefully
  • Charge your notebook
  • Connect to Telsa
  • Establish a stable WiFi connection
  • Use Edge / Chrome browser (Brave browser did not work for me)

Installation

Follow “Headlamps (SAE-to-Global) - Headlamp Assembly - Pair (Retrofit)” manual from Tesla

Since newer versions the software change can now be made in the cars service+ menu. Image alt Image alt Image alt

You can test the headlights now by starting the light show. It should now be able to project “TESLA” at some point during the show.

Adjust headlight leveling with this “Headlights - Adjust - Global (Wall Method)” manual from Tesla
